Embroidered leavers hoodies give a year group something that looks smarter than a printed hoodie and survives years of washing. At CentralCustom we stitch school crests, year-group names and personal nicknames directly into the garment, so the design cannot crack, peel or fade the way heat-applied vinyl eventually does. If you want a hoodie that still looks presentable at a school reunion, embroidery is the finish to ask for.
We handle leavers orders across the UK — primary schools, secondary schools, sixth forms, colleges and university societies — from a single tutor group through to a full year of 250 pupils.
Why choose CentralCustom for embroidered leavers hoodies
- Proper digitising, not auto-conversion. Your crest or logo is digitised into a stitch file by hand, so small text stays readable and fine detail does not turn into a blur.
- A stitched-out sample before the run. We can show you how the artwork actually sews before we commit a whole year group’s worth of hoodies to it.
- One order, many names. Individual pupil names or nicknames can be embroidered per garment without you placing dozens of separate orders.
- Size sets you can try on. Leavers hoodies are usually worn oversized, and sizing is where group orders go wrong. We can supply sizing samples so pupils pick from the real thing.
- A single point of contact. One person handles the artwork, the size list and the delivery date, rather than passing you round a call centre.
Where embroidery works best on a leavers hoodie
Embroidery is a stitched finish, so it suits compact, bold artwork rather than large photographic designs. The placements that work reliably:
- Left chest — the school crest or logo, usually 8–10cm wide. This is the classic leavers hoodie look.
- Sleeve — “Class of 2027”, a set of initials, or a squad number running down the arm.
- Back neck — a small year-group line sitting just below the collar seam.
- Front pouch pocket — a name or nickname on the pocket, which reads well without competing with the chest crest.
Where the design needs a large back — a full list of every pupil in the year, for example — embroidery is the wrong tool on its own, because the stitch count becomes enormous and the garment stiffens. In that case we normally embroider the chest crest and print the back list. Mixing the two finishes on one hoodie is straightforward and often gives the best result.
Who orders embroidered leavers hoodies
- Year 6 primary leavers — a stitched school crest with the child’s first name is a keepsake parents hold on to.
- Year 11 GCSE leavers — schools that want the hoodie to look like official school kit rather than novelty merchandise usually specify embroidery.
- Sixth form and college leavers — a subtler, more grown-up finish for students who will genuinely wear it after they leave.
- University course and society groups — society crests and committee roles embroidered on the chest or sleeve.
- Teaching staff — many schools add a small run of staff hoodies alongside the pupil order.
Frequently asked questions
Is embroidery more expensive than printing?
It is priced differently rather than always higher. Embroidery is costed on stitch count and the number of positions, while printing is costed on colours and print size. For a small chest crest embroidery is very competitive; for a large multi-colour back design printing is usually the cheaper route. Send us the design and we will price both.
Can every pupil have their own name embroidered?
Yes. Individual names, nicknames or initials can be stitched per garment. We will ask for a clean spreadsheet of names against sizes, which is far quicker and less error-prone than collecting them by email.
Do you need my school’s crest in a special format?
A vector file (AI, EPS or PDF) gives the best result, but we can work from a good-quality PNG or JPG. Our team redraws and digitises the artwork before stitching, so you do not need to prepare a stitch file yourself.
How small can text be embroidered?
As a rule of thumb, letters below around 5mm tall start to lose definition in stitching. If your crest contains a school motto in tiny type, we will usually suggest either enlarging it or simplifying that element — and we will show you what it looks like first.
When should we place the order?
Earlier than most people expect. Leavers season runs from roughly April to July and it is the busiest period of the year for every UK supplier. Getting artwork approved and sizes collected before the Easter break gives you comfortable headroom.
Can we order a small number of hoodies?
Yes — small groups, single tutor groups and staff-only runs are all fine. Get in touch with the quantity you have in mind and we will confirm what is workable.
