Patches are one of the most useful things in custom apparel and one of the most commonly ordered badly. Someone sends a logo, gets a quote, approves it, and only when the box arrives do they discover the strapline is illegible, the badge peels off the softshell after two washes, or the shape does not sit properly on a cap panel.
Almost all of that is avoidable. There are four main ways a patch can be constructed, four ways it can be attached, and a handful of artwork decisions that determine whether the result looks sharp or muddy. Get those three things right and a patch is the most flexible branding tool you can buy — one emblem you can put on jackets, caps, bags, blankets and fleeces bought from completely different suppliers, years apart, and still have everything match.
Here is how to choose.
The Four Main Patch Types
Embroidered patches
The classic. Threads are stitched onto a backing fabric to build up the design, usually with a stitched border around the edge. You get a raised, textured, unmistakably premium finish — the reason club crests, cadet badges and heritage branding almost always go this route.
Strengths: durable, tactile, looks and feels like quality, ages well.
Limits: thread has physical width, so very fine detail and very small lettering fill in. Colour count is practical rather than unlimited — every additional thread colour adds a stop. Gradients are not really possible; you fake them with blended stitch directions.
Best for: club crests, company logos with bold shapes, uniformed group badges, anything where the patch is meant to feel substantial.
Woven patches
Instead of stitching thread onto a base fabric, the design is woven from fine threads as the fabric itself is made. The threads are much thinner than embroidery threads, so the resolution is dramatically higher.
Strengths: holds small text and fine detail that embroidery cannot. Thinner and more flexible, so it sits flatter and drapes better on lightweight garments.
Limits: flat rather than raised. It does not have the tactile, premium feel some people are specifically buying a patch for.
Best for: logos with straplines, detailed illustrative crests, small badges, and anything under about 50mm where embroidery would lose the detail.
If you have ever been told "your text is too small to embroider," a woven patch is usually the answer.
PVC and silicone patches
A moulded rubber-style badge. The design is built in layers of soft PVC or silicone rather than thread or fabric.
Strengths: completely waterproof, very hard-wearing, holds sharp edges and clean shapes, and handles outdoor and wet conditions better than anything fabric-based.
Limits: a modern, technical look that suits outdoor and performance brands but sits oddly on traditional blazers or heritage kit. Colours are solid blocks rather than blends.
Best for: outdoor gear, technical outerwear, dog and equestrian equipment, marine and watersports, anything that lives in the rain.
Chenille patches
The fluffy, looped-yarn varsity badge — the giant letter on an American college jacket. Made from thick chenille yarn on a felt base.
Strengths: enormous physical presence, strong retro and varsity character, and unbeatable at large sizes.
Limits: only works for simple, bold shapes — letters, numbers, basic symbols. Detail is impossible.
Best for: varsity and leavers jackets, oversized letter badges, and anything deliberately trading on that retro sports aesthetic.
Choosing a Backing
The backing decides how the patch attaches and it is where most regret lives.
Sew-on is the strongest and most permanent. If the garment gets washed hard, worn outdoors and expected to last years, sew it on. This is the right default for club crests and workwear.
Iron-on (heat seal) is fast and neat, and perfectly good on cotton and polycotton. It is not appropriate for waterproofs, softshells or heavily textured knitwear, where the adhesive has nothing reliable to grip. On garments that see industrial laundering, an iron-on patch should also be tacked down with a few stitches.
Hook-and-loop exists for one reason: change. Names, roles, ranks, sponsors and seasonal branding all move. If any part of the badge might need swapping, hook-and-loop saves you buying garments twice.
Self-adhesive is for short-term use, displays, and non-garment applications. It is not a garment solution.
One thing worth knowing: patches are often the right answer specifically because direct embroidery is the wrong one. Embroidering straight onto a waterproof jacket puts hundreds of needle holes through the membrane. A sew-on or hook-and-loop patch avoids that entirely, which is why so much technical outerwear is badged rather than embroidered.
Getting Your Artwork Right
Three rules cover most of it.
Send vector if you possibly can. An AI, EPS, PDF or SVG file scales cleanly and gives whoever digitises it clean edges to work from. A screenshot of your logo pulled off a website will produce a patch that looks like a screenshot of your logo.
Respect the minimum text height. Embroidered lettering needs roughly 5mm of height to stay readable. Below that, the counters in letters like "e", "a" and "g" fill in with thread. If your logo has a strapline that will not survive at your chosen patch size, you have three honest options: enlarge the text, drop the strapline, or switch to a woven patch.
Decide the shape and border deliberately. The border is part of the design. A merrowed (overlocked) edge only follows simple outlines; a laser-cut or heat-cut edge can follow a complex bespoke shape. Deciding this early stops you being handed a circular badge for a shield-shaped crest.
Everything then goes through digitising — the process of converting your artwork into an actual stitch file, deciding stitch types, directions, densities and sequence. FAQ
Can I have a patch made from a photograph?
Not directly. Photographic detail cannot be reproduced in thread or weave. It can be simplified into a stylised, patch-friendly version, and we will talk you through what survives that process before you commit.
Do patches work on caps?

How many colours can a patch have?
Embroidered patches are practical up to a moderate number of thread colours; woven and PVC patches handle more. Blends and gradients are limited in every construction — plan for flat colour areas.
Is a patch cheaper than direct embroidery?
It depends on quantity and on how many different garments you are badging. Across a range of garments bought at different times, a patch is usually the cheaper and more consistent route. On a single style in a single order, direct embroidery often wins.
