Embroidery on Tricky Garments: Waterproofs, Softshells, Knitwear and Caps (A UK Guide)

Not every garment takes embroidery the same way. Here is what actually happens when you stitch a logo onto a waterproof jacket, a softshell, a chunky knit or a structured cap — and when a badge is the better answer.

Most guides to branded clothing treat embroidery as a single thing you either choose or do not choose. In practice, the garment matters far more than the logo. The same left-chest design that sits perfectly on a piqué polo can pucker on a knitted jumper, sink into a fleece, or put a few hundred tiny holes through a waterproof membrane.

This guide walks through the garments that cause the most trouble, what actually goes wrong, and what we do about it — so you can order with your eyes open rather than finding out after the jackets arrive.

Why the garment matters more than the logo

Embroidery works by pulling thread through fabric under tension. Every stitch pulls the material slightly inwards. On a stable woven fabric, that pull is negligible. On something stretchy, loosely knitted, coated, or built in layers, the fabric moves — and the logo distorts with it.

Two things counteract this. The first is backing (also called stabiliser): a sheet placed behind the fabric during stitching that holds it still. The second is pull compensation, a digitising adjustment where shapes are drawn very slightly wider than the finished size so they end up correct once the fabric has drawn in. Getting these two right for the specific garment is most of the job.

Waterproof and shower-resistant jackets

This is the one that catches people out. A genuinely waterproof jacket works because of a membrane or coating, usually with taped seams on the inside. Embroidery punches a dense grid of needle holes straight through that membrane. On a jacket rated for light showers, you will probably never notice. On a properly waterproof shell worn on a wet site all day, the chest logo can become a slow leak.

What we do instead. For fully waterproof outerwear we normally recommend one of three routes: a heat-applied transfer or printed badge that sits on the surface without piercing the membrane; an embroidered patch stitched onto a backing and then heat-sealed to the jacket; or embroidery placed only where a waterproof layer is not critical, such as the sleeve or the back of the collar. If a supplier offers an embroidery-ready panel on the jacket, that is designed for exactly this and is usually the cleanest option.

If you are set on stitching, a low-stitch-count logo with an open fill does less damage than a dense, solid one — but nothing makes the holes disappear.

Softshell jackets

Softshell is a laminate: a stretchy outer face, a membrane, and a fleece backing bonded together. It embroiders well, but two problems recur.

The first is puckering around the design, caused by the stretch layer pulling in. A cut-away backing — a firm stabiliser that stays in the garment permanently rather than being torn away — fixes most of it. The second is thickness: a heavily lined softshell can hold the hoop unevenly, giving a logo that sits slightly skewed. Larger logos need more care here than small ones.

Softshells are one of the garments where a physical test sew-out earns its keep, because the finished look depends heavily on the specific jacket.

Fleece

Fleece has the opposite problem to a waterproof: nothing gets damaged, but the pile swallows the stitches. Fine detail and small lettering disappear into the fabric, and outlines look furry rather than sharp.

The fixes are all in the digitising. A heavier underlay lays the pile flat before the top stitches go down, slightly higher stitch density stops the fibres poking through, and the design is often scaled up a little compared with the polo version. Thin lines and text below roughly 6mm are best avoided on fleece altogether. Our embroidered fleeces range is set up with this in mind.

Knitwear, jumpers and beanies

Chunky knits and rib-knit beanies are stretchy and open, which is a difficult combination. Stitch straight onto a loose knit and the logo will distort as soon as the garment is worn, and the fabric can show through gaps in the design.

The standard approach is a cut-away backing plus a topping — a thin water-soluble film laid on top of the fabric during stitching, which stops the needles pushing thread down into the knit. It dissolves or brushes away afterwards. For very open knits, a small embroidered badge applied to the garment is often neater and more durable than direct stitching.

Beanies bring their own quirk: the design has to be positioned for how the hat sits when the cuff is folded, which is not where it looks right when the beanie is lying flat.

Caps and structured headwear

Caps are stitched on a specialist cap frame rather than a flat hoop, and the machine works from the centre outwards. A few practical consequences:

  • Structured caps have a stiff buckram front panel. It holds a design beautifully, but the seam running up the middle of a six-panel cap limits how wide a logo can go before it starts crossing that ridge.
  • Unstructured caps are more forgiving on width but need better stabilising.
  • Logos that are wide and short work far better than tall ones. A tall design runs out of room quickly on a cap front.

Performance and technical sports fabrics

Lightweight polyester training tops behave a bit like knitwear: stretchy, thin, and easily puckered. Dense logos are the enemy here — the weight of thread on a thin fabric distorts the panel and can feel scratchy against the skin.

For sports kit, an open, lighter-stitch version of the logo is usually the right call, or a print instead of embroidery. Sponsor logos and squad numbers are almost always printed rather than stitched, for exactly this reason.

Frequently asked questions

Does embroidery ruin a waterproof jacket?

It compromises the waterproofing at the logo position. On a light shower jacket most people never notice; on a technical waterproof used in serious weather, it can matter. A heat-applied badge avoids the problem entirely.

Why does my logo look different on a fleece than on a polo?

Because the pile absorbs fine detail. The same stitch file rarely performs equally well on both — we usually adjust the underlay and density, and sometimes the size, for each garment type.

Can I put the same logo on every garment in my order?

Yes, and you should for brand consistency — but the underlying stitch file may be tuned differently per garment. That is our job, not yours, and it does not mean paying for digitising twice. Our custom embroidery service covers this as standard.

When is a badge better than direct embroidery?

Whenever the garment is waterproof, very open-knit, very thin, or something you may want to move the branding on and off. Badges also let you stitch a detailed crest properly and then apply it to something that could never be hooped.

How do I know it will look right before I commit?

Ask for a sew-out on the actual garment. A screen mock-up cannot show you how a fabric behaves. On tricky items it is the only reliable check.
