Leavers Hoodie Fabrics Explained: Cotton, Polycotton, GSM and What Actually Lasts

Most leavers hoodie decisions get made on colour and design — but fabric and GSM are what decide whether the hoodie still looks good two years later. Here is what the fabric labels actually mean, and how to choose.

Almost every leavers hoodie conversation starts with colour and back-print ideas. Fabric barely gets a mention. Then eighteen months later, half the year group’s hoodies have gone bobbly, lost their shape, or shrunk enough that the sleeves sit awkwardly — and the ones that still look good turn out to have been a different blend all along.

Fabric is the least glamorous decision in a leavers hoodie order and the one that most affects whether the hoodie survives. This guide explains what the labels mean, what GSM actually tells you, and how each option behaves under print, embroidery and repeated washing.

The three numbers on every hoodie spec

When you get a quote, the garment will usually be described with three pieces of information: the blend (for example 80% cotton / 20% polyester), the GSM (grams per square metre), and the construction (usually brushed fleece-back). Those three between them tell you nearly everything about how the hoodie will feel and wear.

Blend

  • 80/20 polycotton — the standard leavers hoodie. Soft cotton face, polyester for stability and shape retention. This is what the overwhelming majority of UK school leavers hoodies are made from, and for good reason: it holds its shape, resists shrinkage better than pure cotton, and takes both print and embroidery well.
  • 100% cotton (or near) — softer and more breathable, and it feels more premium in the hand. The trade-off is shrinkage and slower drying. On a year-group order where sizes were guessed once in March, a fabric that shrinks is a real risk.
  • Poly-rich blends (50/50 or higher polyester) — cheaper, very colour-stable, dries fast, and resists creasing. It feels less soft and can pill on the sleeve cuffs with heavy wear. Fine for a one-off event top, less ideal for a keepsake.
  • Organic cotton blends — usually organic cotton with a recycled polyester content. Handles like a good 80/20 and carries certification schemes such as GOTS or the Global Recycled Standard. Costs more per unit, but for schools with a sustainability policy it is the cleanest answer.

GSM

GSM is fabric weight — grams per square metre. It is the single most useful number on the spec sheet, because it correlates directly with how substantial the hoodie feels.

  • 240–280 GSM — lightweight. Comfortable for summer leavers events and cheap, but thin. It will feel noticeably flimsier than the school PE hoodie.
  • 280–320 GSM — the mainstream leavers hoodie weight. Warm enough for a British autumn, not so heavy that pupils refuse to wear it in June.
  • 320–350+ GSM — heavyweight. Substantial, holds structure well, and is the weight most associated with the oversized street-style fit that older students often want. Costs more and takes longer to dry.

If you only remember one thing from this article: ask for the GSM before you compare two quotes. Two hoodies at very different prices are very often just two different weights, and comparing them on price alone is meaningless.

Construction

Almost all leavers hoodies are fleece-back — a smooth outer face with a brushed, fluffy inner. A ring-spun cotton face gives a noticeably smoother, less fuzzy surface than standard open-end cotton, which matters if you are printing fine detail. Loopback (French terry, unbrushed inside) is lighter and less warm, and is occasionally chosen for summer leavers wear.

How fabric changes your print and embroidery options

This is where the fabric decision stops being cosmetic.

Screen printing and DTF transfers sit best on a smooth, tightly knitted face. High-cotton, ring-spun fabrics give the crispest edges. Very heavily brushed or fluffy surfaces can slightly soften fine linework.

Dye migration is the one to watch on poly-rich fabrics. On garments with high polyester content — especially in red, maroon, navy and bottle green — dye from the fabric can bleed into a light-coloured print over time, turning white ink pink or grey. It is entirely preventable with the right underbase or a blocker transfer, but you need to raise it before production, not after. If you are printing white or pastel artwork onto a dark poly-rich hoodie, ask your supplier directly how they are handling migration.

Embroidery needs a stable fabric. Heavier GSM and a higher polyester content both help, because the fabric is less likely to pucker around a dense stitch area. Lightweight 100% cotton with a large chest crest is where puckering happens. Backing (the stabiliser used behind the stitching) does most of the work here, but starting with a fabric that has some body makes the result better. Fabric, sizing and shrinkage

Cotton shrinks. Polyester does not, meaningfully. So the higher the cotton content, the more allowance you need to build in.

A well-made 80/20 hoodie will typically move very little after a first wash, because the fabric is pre-shrunk during manufacture. A cheap 100% cotton hoodie washed hot can lose a noticeable amount of body length. Since leavers hoodies are ordered once, months in advance, from a size list collected across an entire year group, this matters more than it would for a single garment.

Washing and long-term appearance

Bobbling (pilling) is the most common complaint about leavers hoodies a year on, and it is largely a function of fabric quality and washing habits rather than a defect. Short fibres work loose and tangle. Higher-grade ring-spun cotton pills less. So does washing inside out, at 30°C, without fabric conditioner, and avoiding the tumble dryer where possible.

Print longevity follows the same rules: inside out, cool wash, no tumble drying, and never iron directly onto a printed area. Embroidery is far more forgiving on all counts — it is stitched thread, not a surface layer, so there is nothing to crack.

A quick decision guide

  • Standard school year group, best all-round choice: 80/20 polycotton, 280–320 GSM.
  • Premium keepsake, older students, oversized fit: heavyweight 320+ GSM, high cotton, ring-spun face.
  • Tight budget or a summer event top: lighter GSM or a poly-rich blend — but check dye migration if printing light colours.
  • School with a sustainability commitment: certified organic cotton / recycled polyester blend.
  • Large embroidered crest: avoid the lightest weights; specify 300 GSM or above.

FAQ

Is a heavier hoodie always better?

No. Above about 350 GSM you gain structure but lose wearability — pupils leave them in lockers. For most school year groups, 280–320 GSM is the sweet spot.

Will an organic cotton hoodie feel different?

In a good blend, barely. Organic cotton is a farming standard, not a handle difference. The noticeable variables are still GSM and whether the cotton is ring-spun.

Can I mix fabrics within one order?

Usually not within a single style, and you would not want to — different fabrics take dye and print slightly differently, so the year group’s hoodies would not match. Pick one garment for the whole order.

Which fabric holds colour best?

Poly-rich blends hold garment colour longest. High-cotton garments in strong shades will fade slightly over years of washing, which many people consider part of the charm.
