Colour is almost always the first thing a year group argues about, and the last thing anyone agrees on. It is also the decision that most affects whether the hoodie gets worn after results day or lives at the bottom of a wardrobe. Here is how UK schools, sixth forms and universities actually settle it.

- Black — the safest choice and the most-ordered. It flatters everyone, hides ink and grass stains, and makes white or metallic-effect print pop. The downside is that it is hot in a June heatwave and it is what every other year group picked.
- Navy — nearly as versatile as black but softer, and it photographs better in group shots. Watch out if your uniform is already navy; many schools rule it out for that reason.

Open votes with unlimited options do not converge. What works:
- Shortlist first. Take the school-approved colours and cut them to three or four. A committee of four can do this in ten minutes.
- Show the actual design, not swatches. Put your real front logo and back print on each shortlisted colour so people vote on the finished thing.
- One round, fixed deadline, majority wins. Announce the closing time before you open it.
- Rank a second choice in the same vote. Ask everyone for their top two, so you leave the vote with a winner and an agreed fallback colour.
- Let staff have a say if staff names are going on. It avoids an awkward conversation later.

A fallback colour is the agreed second choice you switch to if the winning colour cannot be supplied for the whole order. It sounds like admin, but it is what stops a settled decision from turning back into an argument a fortnight before your deadline.
It matters because not every hoodie colour is stocked in every size. Children's sizes for Year 6 groups and the very largest adult sizes are where gaps show up most often, and availability on a particular shade can change between the day you vote and the day you order. A year group that has already ranked a second choice simply moves to it. A year group that has not has to run the vote again while the clock is ticking.

- Pick a fallback that works with the same print. If your first choice is black with white print, navy or charcoal makes an easy fallback because the artwork does not need changing. A fallback of heather grey would mean changing the print colour as well, and re-approving the design.
- Check availability before the vote closes. When you ask for a quote, send your shortlist and a rough size spread and ask us to confirm each colour is available in the sizes you need, before anyone gets attached to one.
- Keep the whole order in one colour. Swapping only the sizes that are short leaves the year-group photo with two shades in it. If the first choice cannot cover everyone, most organisers move the whole order to the fallback.
